Artist's Comments

This one was an idea that popped into my head after reading a little bit of the book "Watership Down" by Richard Adams as well as seeing the 1978 animated film (trust me it's not kids stuff I can assure you of that). After reading this chapter (chapter 6 - The Story and Blessing of El-farehah), I instantly loved it becuase the story itself seemed so Greek in how at first, in the beginning when the world was young, everything was simple and then the arrogance of the prince rabbit El-farehah angered the sun god Frith and so he got the better of him by making all the other animals different as well as his enemy.

So, in doing this peice I had to do it in a kind of mural fashion, and some parts of it I borrowed from the film, such as the swirl pattern on the rabbits leg, while the rest, I took my own liberties, but I had to make other references to the story, such as the flat hill with the singular tree in the background. Then there's the great sun in the background, the great Frith, keeping an eye on El-farerah to make sure that he is quick and full of tricks in a world filled with enemies.

The reason why it's black and white now is because at first I wanted to color it, but each time I tried doing colors for it in photoshop, it looked bad. So I decided to post it in black and white for now until I can find a way to make it look better with the program I have. (So, if anyone has suggestions, I'm willing to take any. Basically I want to make it look like a mural or a cave painting. ANd I know that some are going to suggest that I use painter, but I can't do that now, so Photoshop is the only thing I can use at this point).

Watership Down was a really, really wonderful movie. The animation was pretty good consider it was done in 1978.

Yeah, I agree on that. Though really I don't think that kind of stuff can be done today. After all, a lot of the things that go on in Watership Down are very British, if you know what I mean. Still, there is a certain predisposition in American culture to assume that all animation is for kids. I did find Watership Down in the family section and there are stuff that goes on in there that wouldn't exactly be family entertainment, but becuase it's animated it must therefore be for kids. (Which is probably why there is such a stigma against anime fans these days).

You should've watch an animated movie called 'Felidae'. This one was about cats and it was much gruesome than Watership Down. O_o

I'm still hoping that I'll color it where I can do it the kind of justice that a mural painting should be.

Thank you for saying so and thanks for adding it to your favorites. Still, it's a shame that I can't get it colored like a mural the way I want it to.
