A while ago I was looking over some of the stamps that I had in my journal and I gave a little more thought to one that I had that says, "Tire of Yaoi, We don't hate, we just wish you'd do something else". I gave it serious thought after trying to defend my own viewpoint to a few people. I don't hate yaoi myself, although some of the yaoi fans can be a tad irritating.
Such as saying that, "most yuri is pointless". To that, I say that the reason for it is becuase probably because we as male readers and writers of yuri aren't interested in relationships and just want to see the sex portion of it. That's probably the biggest reason, but my own theory is that it takes a certain kind of writer to really get into both the sex and the relationship parts of it. And from what I've seen, yaoi and shonen-ai gets the most of it.
Of course there are some shoujo-ai's out there, but then again they've been around so much that it goes without saying that yuri can be done with them. The ones I have in mind (off the top of my head) are "Sailor Moon" and "Revolutionary Girl Utena".
Though recently I had an idea and I'm not sure how well this'll go over, but perhaps someone with an idea for yuri should get together with a yaoi/shonen-ai writer and help bang out the kinks and give it a greater look and feel.
I don't have a clear source but I have a few theories.
First of all, I think that yuri/shoujo-ai has very few fans. Secondly, the writing of yuri is pretty much like lesbian porn, which it is, but certainly something better can be done, right? So, that's something else that it needs, better writing. Thirdly, I also think that yuri needs more artists.
There isn't more, because it has the stigmata of Lesbian Porn. It's more liable to get pulled from Deviantart as well, because for some reason, women are more offensive to look at than men.
Writing the interactions of women is definitely harder than for men.

I was about to ask how it is difficult about writing the interactions of women is harder, but giving it more thought I can see why, because as a guy I wouldn't know how a woman would react to a certain situation.

Still, I'm starting to think that yaoi artists and writers can teach yuri artists and writers how to make the stories more interesting.
